Council approves 2025 Silver Box public art selections; four works to go on one-year loan

The Sandpoint Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation Commission recommended three artworks and one alternate for the city’s 2025 Silver Box public art on-loan program, and the city council approved the recommendations at its June 25 meeting.
Commission chair Ellie Sussness summarized the program history and selection: the stainless-steel display boxes were designed and fabricated locally and the program places art on public streets for one-year loans. The commission recommended “The Icosahedron” by Kirk Cease for the Fourth and Church position (post office), “Skyward Grace” by Denny Henson for Fourth and Oak (Farm and Park location), and “Kingfishers” by Lee Harris for Fifth and Oak by Columbia Bank; the commission also named “Beauty of Duality” by Dave Gonzo as an alternate.
Sussness told the council the program includes a $1,000 stipend per artist funded from the Sandpoint Urban Renewal public art fund; the commission said the stipend successfully attracts regional artists and suggested increasing the stipend if the city wants to recruit artists from farther away because of shipping costs. The council’s motion authorized execution of artist agreements and the expenditure necessary to support the one-year loan placements.
