The Las Vegas Traffic and Parking Commission voted unanimously June 26 to install two speed cushions on Tom Boulevard between Deer Springs Way and Dorel Lane to address speeding and cut-through traffic.
Joseph Norby, the city traffic engineer, told commissioners staff conducted traffic counts and a speed study on the segment. Norby reported roughly 400 vehicles at the intersection of Tom and Deer Springs/Dorel, a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour, an observed average speed of about 35 mph, and an 85th-percentile speed of 43 mph. He said those results meet the city's Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan criteria for speed-hump installation and that Las Vegas Fire and Rescue (CLV fire) supports the proposed design.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing on this item. Commissioner Stamper moved to approve the installation of two speed humps as shown on staff diagrams; Commissioner Swadling seconded. The commission recorded a unanimous vote in favor. Norby said the city has seen reductions in observed speeds in similar installations and will proceed with design and scheduling for installation.
