Public works flags Kelly Building replacement and landfill equipment needs

Public works staff briefed commissioners on capital needs at the county shop and landfill, including a replacement for the aging Kelly prefabricated building and new heavy equipment for landfill operations.
A presenter explained the existing Kelly building is in poor condition and not easily refurbished, and recommended a new structure with greater storage capacity and coverage so staff can protect equipment and pre-cast work: "That building just needs to be upgraded," the presenter said. He estimated a replacement building roughly twice the current size would meet needs.
On landfill operations, staff said the site would benefit from dedicated equipment to limit reliance on road-and-bridge crews. The recommendation included replacing an excavator with heavy hours and adding a dump truck to handle dirt and site work. "The landfill should be a little more self-sufficient with some equipment ... instead of having to rely on road and bridge," the presenter said.
Commissioners asked for sizing, cost estimates and clearer specs, and staff agreed to return with vendor quotes and more detailed capital plans for inclusion in the budget workbook.
