The Planning and Zoning Commission on June 25 voted 5–1 against recommending city council adopt Resolution 2025‑38 to rename South Spruce Street to Kenai Beach Street.
Commissioner Veil moved to recommend the name change; the motion received a second. During discussion multiple commissioners said they had received comments from nearby institutions — including a residential resource center and churches — expressing concern about the costs and disruption a forced street‑name change would impose. Commissioners suggested adding directional signage to point to the Kenai North Beach as an alternative that would avoid changing property addresses and causing hardship for businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Commissioner Reveal argued the change would help out‑of‑town visitors find the beach via internet searches, but several commissioners said the burden on residents and nonprofits outweighed that benefit. The clerk called the roll after discussion: Commissioner Fikes voted no; Commissioner Woodard no; Commissioner Reveal yes; Commissioner Petty no; Vice chair Ersley no; Commissioner Krauss no. The clerk announced five no votes and one yes, and the motion failed; the commission did not forward the recommendation to council.
