Resources committee updates phased redistricting timeline; city engineers evaluating possible new fire station site

The Woburn School Committee’s resources and capital-planning reports on June 25 provided two substantive updates:

Redistricting implementation: Administration circulated a phased redistricting implementation plan with a public timeline that includes data review and outreach August through October, principal and staffing conversations in November–December, final recommendations in January and family notifications by April 1 to allow operational planning ahead of the next school year. The committee said it will use surveys, advisory-group meetings and interactive maps to collect community input, and the district will post implementation materials and maps on a redistricting website.

Fire-station evaluation: Mayor and city staff told the committee they are investigating Gillis Field, the athletic field across from the Reeves, as a potential site for a new fire station (Station 5). The city’s engineers and officials are examining feasibility; the committee was told that if the site continues to be considered, city staff will bring proposals and public meetings to the school committee to address school-facility impacts.

The resources committee also noted capital-measure implementation is underway following a recent capital vote and that staff are seeking grant opportunities to supplement playground and facility projects.

What’s next: Advisory and stakeholder groups will reconvene in the fall on redistricting; the city’s engineering review of Gillis Field is ongoing and any formal fire-station proposal would return to the committee with community conversations.
