Woburn School Committee rates superintendent 'proficient' after evaluation; mixed scores on some standards

The Woburn School Committee on June 25 reported the results of its annual evaluation of Superintendent Matthew Crowley, concluding an overall rating of “proficient.” Committee members used the DESE-aligned rubric and discussed strengths, areas of growth and next steps.

Chair Ellen Crowley reported committee findings by standard: instructional leadership and management/operations were rated proficient by the majority; community and family engagement and professional culture had at least one member rate them as “needs improvement” and other members rate them “exemplary.” Evaluations of progress toward district goals were described as largely proficient, with some members marking needs improvement and others exemplary on subcomponents.

During discussion, committee members praised specific accomplishments — including expanded student-facing staff and the district’s response to newly arrived student populations — while urging more proactive communication and follow-through on ongoing projects. Several members said they want more consistent, earlier engagement with the public on major initiatives and faster implementation of some administrative tasks.

The committee voted to make the members’ rating sheets public. Superintendent Crowley thanked the committee for the feedback, described the district as a “learning organization,” and said the administration will use the evaluation to guide improvements.

What’s next: The committee will use the evaluation comments to inform goals and oversight for the coming year; the evaluation summary will be recorded in committee files and made public as requested by the committee.
