Finance committee approves HealthDirect as pharmacy provider for Pine Valley Community Village

The Richland County Executive Finance Standing Committee voted June 23 to accept staff's recommendation to contract with HealthDirect Pharmacy as the pharmacy provider for Pine Valley Community Village.
Committee member Britney presented the procurement review, saying that multiple bids were received and “there is 1 pharmacy that is cheaper, and provides everything that we need, and that would be Health Direct Pharmacy.” She told the committee HealthDirect is associated with LeadingAge and that facility staff agreed with the recommendation based on cost and services. Britney said the recommended vendor would begin service “within 60 days.”
Britney described problems with the incumbent provider, saying the current pharmacy’s consult pharmacist reported the provider “weren’t paying their distributors and they weren’t paying some of their employees,” which prompted closer vetting. She said two bidders could meet service needs (Guardian and HealthDirect) but HealthDirect showed the best cost savings and additional in-service options such as IV certification for staff.
Committee members asked for follow-up documentation. Board member Steve asked for a “written report from you giving your assessment and recommendation,” and Britney agreed to prepare a short report with bid comparisons and the medical director’s endorsement. Committee members also asked Britney to provide the facility medical director’s written recommendation; Britney said she could provide it.
A motion to follow Britney’s recommendation to move forward with HealthDirect was made, seconded by Gil, and approved by voice vote. The committee directed staff to include the written assessment, bid materials and the medical director’s statement in the packet for the full county board.
The committee’s administrative notes indicated the pharmacy contract is expiring this year and that staff had reviewed contract language for compliance. No contract award documents were signed at the committee meeting; the item will return to the full county board with the written materials the committee requested.
