The Wausau Board of Public Works on Tuesday, June 24 approved several contractor payments, awarded an overhead-door replacement contract and accepted a single proposal for abatement consultant services, then moved to seek a closed session on prequalification statements for a retaining wall project.
The board voted to approve awarding the 2025 DPW overhead door replacement contract to American Door Company of Wausau after review of two bids: American Door Company at $49,320 and Central Door Solutions at $49,769 for four doors. A board member moved to "approve American Door Company of Wausau, and to work with them to, work within our budget the number of doors that we can replace this year," and the motion was seconded and carried on an aye vote.
The board also accepted the lone proposal for abatement consultant services for the Wausau Water Treatment Plant and meter shop demolition from Northstar. Board members discussed the proposal's line items: bid document preparation for $875, an hourly project oversight rate of $95, and an asbestos-sampling line item of $3,275 based on an estimate of 140โ160 samples at $15 each. One board member noted Northstar was the only firm at the mandatory walkthrough; the acceptance motion was seconded and carried.
Two contractor pay estimates were approved. The board approved pay estimate number 3 to Pembroke Companies for the 2025 Downtown Mall Redevelopment Phase 2 in the amount of $654,887.65 after a staff review (noted as having been reviewed by Garrett from CORE). The board also approved pay estimate number 2 for the 2025 Street Construction Project B (Fulton Street, First Street, Second Street) to Switlik and Sons in the amount of $839,789.03; that item was recommended for approval by project inspector Kurt DeBoer.
Near the end of the meeting a board member moved "to go into closed session pursuant section 19 85 d of the Wisconsin statutes for the purpose of considering and deliberating on prequalification statements for Washington Street retaining wall project." The motion was seconded; the vote on that motion is not recorded in the transcript provided.
The actions taken at Tuesday's meeting advance multiple public-works projects across the city, including building and street work and asbestos-abatement planning for the Wausau Water Treatment Plant demolition. The board's decisions on payments fund ongoing construction activity; the closed-session motion, if approved, would allow directors to consider contractor prequalification materials out of public view under the cited statutory exception.
