Community group launches 'Wow Game' skatepark event July 26; city recreation reports busy summer season

Barbara Sears, speaking as a community presenter, said registration is open through July 17 and the event is primarily aimed at ages 6–18 though spectators of all ages are welcome. Sponsors and donors include the Lohr Foundation, Rotary (concessions funding), local businesses providing shirts and prizes, and a $35,000 earlier grant from a Tony Hawk foundation for the park’s opening. Sears said the event will offer cash and in‑kind prizes (helmets, pads, scooters, skateboards) and that the city’s staff are providing in‑kind support for the inaugural year. The organizer said the event will use simple judging this first year with plans to bring in certified judges in future years.
In related recreation updates, staff reported the summer season is active: the parks and recreation department recorded about 30 events in May and expected roughly 34 in June, with weddings, tournaments and Stampede‑related activities upcoming. Recreation staff also said they now field two girls’ softball teams (about 14 players each) and have held archery and fishing outings in partnership with 4‑H and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
