City Manager Joel Kramer presented preliminary floor plans for the first and second floors of the city’s Administrative Services Building and said McKinstry had provided architectural approval; he described planned uses for a ground-level business office and a second-floor training/conference room intended to seat about 25 people.
Kramer said the project will include removing ceiling tiles and some finishes to create a more open, warehouse‑style look on the upper floor and that an abatement contractor will handle asbestos removal: “There is asbestos, but that person will be is highly trained to remove all that much like we when they did over here. We'll have somebody professionally removing it so everything will be in order in that sense.”
The council considered and approved a services agreement with Cary Environmental Services for asbestos abatement work related to the renovation; Kramer said work could start as soon as the week following approval and the contractor’s timeline is approximately two months.
Kramer also said the city expects a separate contract approval for resurfacing parking lots and lighting, and that Kingstree (contractor name referenced) is finalizing a punch list and could be brought back to the council within about three weeks for a separate contract approval.
The asbestos-abatement contract was approved by voice vote.
