Fiesta Sahuarita draws new attendance data, town begins using Placer AI; Stars and Stripes will be a drone/pyro hybrid

Parks and Recreation and Economic Development staff reported results from the April 5 Fiesta Sahuarita and described a new approach to counting attendees and measuring economic impact using a location‑intelligence platform.

Lacey Simmons, event supervisor for Parks and Recreation, said Fiesta Sahuarita is one of the town's signature events and that the April festival hosted 127 marketplace vendors, 50 children's entrepreneur market vendors and 36 food trucks. Simmons said program features included a free Kids Zone with carnival rides, a beer garden supplied by local vendors, stage performances and a drone show to end the night.

Alex Magalanes, economic development specialist, described the town's new use of Placer AI, a commercial location‑intelligence service that aggregates anonymized mobile-device data with census-tract information to estimate visitor volumes, dwell times and origin areas. Magalanes said the platform was used to compare Fiesta Sahuarita on April 5, 2025 with the 2024 event. He said Placer AI's model indicates total 2025 visitation of about 12,700 people and that visitors stayed longer at peak hours than in 2024, a sign of stronger on-site engagement.

Magalanes acknowledged limitations and privacy concerns raised by council members and said the data are anonymized and aggregated; he said the platform combines mobile data with census-tract demographics to estimate visitor household income and origin areas, and that the town will make the tool available at no cost to businesses participating in the Grow in Sahuarita program.

Simmons said staff solicits attendee feedback with on-site QR-code surveys and that the town recorded more than 50 survey responses with generally positive comments; she noted operational challenges including staffing shortages and difficulties securing carnival vendors and said the Parks & Recreation team is reviewing responses to improve future events.

Stars and Stripes planning

Staff also described plans for the July Stars and Stripes event at Animax Park. Devin (events staff) said the celebration will open at 5 p.m. with approximately 70'75 marketplace vendors, 25 food trucks and family activities across multiple fields; Field 1 will host a car show and Field 4 will be a block‑party style family area.

For the 9 p.m. finale, staff described a hybrid show combining a drone performance by OpenSky Drones with smaller ground pyrotechnics provided by the town's pyrotechnics contractor. Devin said drones can provide large visual effects visible up to a three‑mile radius, and that ground pyrotechnics will be scaled down from previous high‑altitude shells to reduce fallout and allow the show to be contained within Animax Park. The town said it has coordinated safety planning with Santa Rita Fire District and Sahuarita Police Department.
