The Santa Clara City Council accepted a $20,000 donation from the Santa Clara Women’s League Tuesday to support programs at the Santa Clara Senior Center, including health and wellness programming and senior nutrition services.
Emily Adarabile, president of the Santa Clara Women’s League, said the volunteer organization has supported the Senior Center since 1983 and had raised more than half a million dollars in donations over time. “Originally it was to fund the nurses that worked at the senior center... We are really proud to be able to increase our donation. Last year, we gave $12,000, and this year, we are donating $20,000,” Adarabile said during the special order of business.
Adarabile noted that the league’s fundraising historically relied on an annual community melodrama called “Showtime,” and that the group had grown its membership from 53 to 73 members in two years. The donation will support the center’s Be Strong, Live Long health and wellness fair, education and fitness classes, and the senior nutrition program.
Council moved and seconded acceptance of the gift; the council voted unanimously to accept the funds. The City Manager was authorized to receive the check and staff will coordinate use of the funds with the Senior Center and Parks & Recreation staff.
The council acknowledged the Women’s League for long‑term support of seniors and welcomed the organization’s plans to continue fundraising.
