Board approves application for OPI tobacco-use prevention grants for elementary and secondary programs

Missoula County Public Schools trustees approved the district's application for tobacco-use prevention grant funds offered through the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI). The district was offered $6,400 for elementary efforts and $6,400 for secondary efforts to support prevention and cessation programming.
Brooke Kreninger, the district's health services coordinator, told trustees the funds would continue programs piloted this year, including In-depth (an alternative to suspension for students caught vaping or using nicotine), and Not On Tobacco, a cessation curriculum. Kreninger reported 24 students completed the In-depth program and five students completed Not On Tobacco during the current year.
Kreninger said the district purchased two film memberships to enable Screenagers screenings at middle and high schools; Sentinel High School plans a screening in October, and other schools may opt in. The district also purchased a Catch My Breath supplemental curriculum for middle-school vaping prevention.
The administration recommended applying for the grant. Trustee Hayes moved to approve the application; Trustee Walsh seconded. The board voted to approve the tobacco-use prevention grant application; the record notes approval by all trustees present.
