A fifth-grade student and his mother told the KIRKWOOD R-VII Board of Education on June 23 that the student was seriously injured on a playground feature at Kaiser Elementary and asked the district to remove the equipment.
"Hi. My name is Harry, and I'm going into fifth grade at Kaiser. I fell off this spinning pool and broke my femur. It really hurt. I had to miss my lacrosse and baseball season," said Harry Chacamagus during the public-comment period. "Now I am relearning how to walk in physical therapy. I think you should remove this because it's very dangerous, and I don't want anyone else to get hurt on it."
Allison Chacamagus, identified as Harry's mother, addressed the board after him and said the family appreciated the board's attention and thanked members for hearing their concerns. Her remarks were brief and did not include a request for a specific timeline or remedy beyond the removal request.
The statements were made during the meeting's public-comment period, when board policy allows district residents to address the board for up to three minutes; board members did not respond from the dais. The board's public-comment rules were read at the start of the meeting.
The matter was presented as a citizen request rather than a formal agenda item; no vote or board action to remove the equipment was recorded on the June 23 minutes. The board's standard practice, announced at the meeting, is to have the appropriate district staff follow up with speakers after public comment if a response is required.
