The board also approved minutes from a prior meeting and moved to excuse an absent member.
The approval came by voice vote after a motion to accept the scores and eligibility list. Board members voted on two routine procedural items earlier in the meeting — excusing an absent member and approving the minutes presented from Nov. 26, 2024 — each by voice vote.
The votes cleared the way for the fire department to begin background checks for multiple open positions. An assistant fire chief told the board, "we do have the eligibility listed. Just got approved here. We have several slots that are open," and said the department will proceed with backgrounds for candidates on the list.
A police department representative reported four new hires who began orientation the previous weekend and have started the department’s field training program. The representative said the recruits have about 60 days remaining in training before they will be released to patrol on their own. The representative also announced the department’s annual community event, Pharr Night Out, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Main Event parking lot, 500 North Jackson, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Fire department remarks included an announcement that Deputy Chief Cody Baker will retire after roughly 30 years with the city. The assistant fire chief invited board members and others to a short ceremony at Central Station at 5:00 on Friday to mark Baker’s retirement.
Civil service staff reported no additional items and confirmed agenda materials had been presented to the board. During board comments, members publicly commended city public servants and noted ongoing recruitment efforts to replace long-tenured personnel.
The meeting ended after board members moved to adjourn; the chair announced the meeting adjourned at 9:05 a.m.
