Airport awarded $570,000 state grant to replace airfield lighting and PAPIs, no local match required

Kootenai County airport officials told the Board of County Commissioners on June 24 that the Idaho State Department of Aeronautics awarded the airport a $570,000 supplemental grant to replace runway and approach lighting with LED fixtures.
"We were awarded $570,000 from that," said Gaston Patterson, director of the airport. He said the grant covers replacement of runway lighting for the small runway to match the primary runway and replacement of the PAPI (precision approach path indicator) units, which he described as roughly 30 years old and past their service life.
Patterson said the award is 100% grant funding with no local match required. He said staff expects to present final paperwork for grant acceptance to the BOCC within about a week and that construction could occur in winter or likely next spring, depending on ordering and scheduling.
The director described the work as replacing conductors and transformers in the ground as part of modernizing the lighting system; he said the upgrade will reduce maintenance demands and leave taxiway lights as the last incandescent fixtures to be phased out in future rehab projects.
The BOCC received the update as informational; no formal acceptance was recorded at the June 24 briefing.
