Elkhart County approves relocation of school sign and additional stop-ahead sign after crash history

The Elkhart County commissioners approved nonregulatory signage changes on June 23, including relocating a west-facing school-ahead sign for a local Amish school and posting an additional stop-ahead sign at an intersection that county engineers said has experienced four major accidents.
A highway department staff member said the Cloverleaf School on County Road 34 currently has a west-facing school sign; staff recommended moving the sign 400 feet to the west to give drivers more notice. The speaker described the school as an Amish school and said the relocation is intended “just for safety, for traffic.” Commissioners approved the move unanimously.
The engineering department also recommended an additional stop-ahead sign for westbound traffic at County Road 4 and County Road 15 (posted 425 feet east of the stop) after the road reconstruction increased speeds and the county recorded four major accidents at that intersection. Commissioners approved the additional warning sign unanimously.
Both signage changes were recorded on the meeting minutes as nonregulatory sign adjustments to be implemented by the Highway Department.
