Elkhart County approves $87,500 for GIS conversion; accepts $30,000 state seed grant

May Kratzer of Planning and Development requested an $87,500 appropriation “to take care of some outstanding GIS data that we need between departments” and to move old permitting software off unsupported SQL servers, noting there is currently no backup. Kratzer said the amount is intended to ensure departments can continue to access needed data should older systems fail. Commissioners approved the appropriation unanimously.
Kratz (spelled in the transcript as Kratzer) also told the board the state is offering a SEED grant and Elkhart County had been awarded the maximum $30,000 to standardize county data so it is easier to consume across county departments and by the state. Commissioners approved the additional appropriation to accept the grant; the vote was unanimous.
County staff did not provide further line-item details for the $87,500 appropriation during the meeting aside from the stated purpose of data conversion and short-term access continuity for permitting software.
