Board backs county request to host Georgia Golden Olympics in Clayton County

The Clayton County Board of Education on June 23 voted to back a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Clayton County Senior Services to host the Georgia Golden Olympics (GGO) in the county.
Tori Strotter Tanks, director of Clayton County Senior Services and a Georgia Golden Olympics board member, told the school board that GGO is a four‑day multi‑sport senior games event for adults 50 and older with competitions, volunteer roles and a torch lighting and parade. Tanks said moving the event to Clayton County would bring 1,500 or more participants to local venues, boost volunteer opportunities and support intergenerational volunteer pathways between students and senior programs.
Board members expressed support and moved to approve an MOU allowing the county to use district facilities for GGO events, subject to standard facility‑use requirements. Superintendent Dr. Anthony Smith noted the district policy (KG‑R1) requires a facility‑use agreement, a certificate of insurance and appropriate payment terms; administration said staff would work with the county on those items and present them for final contract or fee arrangements.
Board member Sabrina Hill made the motion to back the MOU; Hill’s motion was seconded and the board approved it. Members encouraged the senior‑services staff to integrate student volunteer and pathway opportunities into planning.
School staff said the county will also need to provide insurance and meet the district’s facility‑use conditions before events are scheduled; the county will take the school board’s endorsement to its commission for further action. The board’s approval endorses the county moving forward with planning and coordination with the district.
