Clayton County board confirms two school leadership appointments

The Clayton County Board of Education on June 23 approved two personnel appointments recommended by Superintendent Dr. Anthony Smith: Sharon Wilson as principal of Riverdale High School and Dr. Ophelia Brookshire Shire as assistant principal at Hawthorne Elementary.

The board moved on the recommendations during a portion of the meeting following executive-session consideration. Board member Jesse Goree made the motion to accept the superintendent’s recommendation for Wilson; Mark Christmas seconded. The chair called the vote and the motion passed unanimously. Later the board accepted the recommendation for Dr. Brookshire Shire; that motion was moved by Mary Baker, seconded by Joy Tellis Cooper, and likewise passed unanimously.

The appointments were announced publicly after the votes and the board recognized both appointees in the audience. The board indicated members hoped to take a group photo with the appointees following the meeting.

These actions were taken under the board’s usual personnel procedures; the board did not discuss contract terms in public during the vote. The superintendent and board staff said the appointments followed the district’s hiring and vetting processes and will be finalized through the district’s standard contracting and onboarding steps.
