Peachtree Corners council recognized a donation of nearly $6,000 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) collected through a charity 5K held as part of the Curiosity Lab criterium.
"For those that are unfamiliar with LLS, our mission is to cure blood cancer for all patients and support their families along the journey," said Sydney Thode, a representative of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, during a brief presentation to the council. The city presented a ceremonial check and invited representatives from partner companies that helped raise funds.
Angel Acosta, who identified himself as one of the directors at Whorfen’s Peachtree Corners manufacturing site, said the company has supported the charity for two years and that the site aims to raise a minimum of $15,000 this year. Acosta said the company’s products are used by blood-typing operations and that donated blood is important to many blood-cancer patients.
Claudia de la Vega, who said she is site director for Bridal Inc, said it was the firm’s first time participating and that staff look forward to future events. Mayor commented that he is a leukemia survivor and called the organization’s work “a personal thing.”
The presentation was ceremonial; no council action was required. Staff said the race registration fee and company donations contributed to the almost $6,000 total presented.
