Fayetteville City Council voted June 23 to remand proposed exemptions in the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) back to staff and to schedule additional UDO-related items for further work and review in August.
Council member Majandros (committee chair) summarized the history: the UDO committee had passed a motion with specific timelines to send proposed exemptions to the planning commission, which considered them June 17. Staff later identified unintended negative consequences and recommended returning the matter to staff for refinement. Majandros said he agreed with the planning commission and staff and moved to remand the proposal to staff with a schedule to return to the planning commission on August 19 and back to council on August 25 if ready.
Council adopted the motion without recorded opposition. Separately, council also voted to move a related UDO item to the August work session for language revisions after questions were raised at the committee level. Staff and the committee chair will work in July on the draft language and return it as scheduled.
Council emphasized the need for careful wording to avoid unforeseen outcomes and to preserve review by the planning commission. The actions preserve the committee’s timeline while ensuring staff incorporates the planning commission’s input before further council consideration.
