The Wylie Library Advisory Board heard on June 23 from library staff about three upcoming Friends of the Library fundraising events: a vendor table at the city’s July Fourth fireworks celebration, the annual book sale with a members-only presale, and an indoor mini-golf fundraiser in August.
The nut graf: The Friends will staff a table at Founders Park during the city fireworks event (7:30–9:30 p.m.) selling glow-in-the-dark items at $5 each; the annual book sale will include a members-only presale from 5–7 p.m. on Friday, July 18, followed by the public sale from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on Saturday, July 19; the indoor mini-golf fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, from 6–9 p.m.
Library staff said the July 4 activity grew out of a request from the city public information officer; Friends volunteers will sell light-up and glow merchandise as a fundraiser. The presale on July 18 will be limited to Friends members to reduce incidents of commercial scanners being used to purchase inventory; staff said commercial buyers will not be allowed into the Friday presale but may attend the public sale Saturday. Shoemaker and Heart, a local vendor, will sell coffee and pastries in front of the sale on Saturday.
The mini-golf event, a returning attraction, is organized by an external vendor who sets up a themed course through the library stacks. Staff said the event was popular last year and is intended as a family-friendly, indoor back-to-school activity.
Ending: Staff encouraged board members to publicize the events and support the Friends of the Library, which have also contributed to library projects such as the recently opened play wall.
