Council approves planning commission recommendation to name private road into Family Scholar House development
Summary
The council accepted the planning commission's favorable recommendation to name the entrance road to the Family Scholar House development 'Sue Elssperman Way' (private roadway). The Town of Sellersburg on June 23 accepted Planning Commission Resolution 2025-3 recommending the private entrance road to the Family Scholar House development be named "Sue Elssperman Way." The recommendation came from the planning commission following a public meeting.
Council members discussed whether the road is private or public; staff confirmed the road is a private roadway that Ivy Tech and the developer will maintain and use for addressing. Planning staff and the applicant asked the council to accept the planning commission's favorable recommendation so addresses can reflect the chosen name.
One councilor said if the road were a public town road he would prefer honoring a local person, and stated he would abstain on that principle; other members noted Ivy Tech's role in the project and the donor involvement that supported the development. A motion by Councilor Matt, seconded by Councilor Randy, passed by voice vote with an abstention noted.
The naming will be used for addressing of the site (Family Scholar House units and the state police post referenced in the discussion). Town staff said the roadway will remain private and that the council's action accepts the planning commission's recommendation for the record.
