Council formalizes one-year visitor-center contract with Chamber; funding stays at $75,000

The City Council on June 23 approved a one-year contract with the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce to operate the Mount Shasta Visitor Center and provide visitor promotion and marketing services. The contract formalizes funding the council previously agreed to and sets the city contribution at $75,000 for the fiscal year.

Todd, a city staff member, explained that an earlier resolution had used wording that could be read as setting the rate “in perpetuity,” which the city cannot do. The new one-year agreement is intended to document the scope of work and create an annual contract that can be reviewed and adjusted.

Kayla, the chamber’s executive director, addressed the council during public comment and said the chamber needs an executed contract to confirm the scope and expectations. A visitor-center employee and volunteer, Allison Carpenter, described regular visitor-center hours and outreach activities and said the center’s work supports tourism and local projects such as trail education.

Council members discussed monitoring performance metrics. One council member asked for regular statistics; chamber staff said they report metrics quarterly and would add any council members not already on the mailing list.

A motion to approve the agreement passed with council ayes and no opposition.

Ending: The contract will be executed for the next fiscal year and the city plans to rescind the earlier resolution wording that implied perpetual funding at a later meeting.
