UN condemns Damascus church attack and urges full investigation

The United Nations condemned the terrorist attack at Saint Elias church in Damascus and called for a full investigation to hold perpetrators to account, the UN spokesperson said at a press briefing.
"The secretary-general strongly condemns the Sunday the terrorist attacks that took place on Sunday at the Saint Elias church, in Damascus. He expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and which is a swift recovery to all those injured," the spokesperson said, summarizing the secretary-general's statement. The spokesperson said the secretary-general "reiterates that all perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable."
The spokesperson noted that Syrian interim authorities have condemned the attack and, after a preliminary investigation, attributed it to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The secretary-general called for a full investigation and reaffirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting the Syrian people in their pursuit of peace, dignity and justice.
Garib Pedersen, the UN special envoy on Syria, also issued a statement over the weekend condemning the attack, the spokesperson said. The UN has not announced further investigative steps in the briefing; the spokesperson called for thorough inquiry and accountability.
