Grant Pitchford of Code Enforcement said the amendment grew from the city’s habitability working group and aims to close a gap in the property maintenance code. “Many of the apartment complexes think the post office maintains those. Big no,” Pitchford said. The proposed change would make clear that property owners — not the U.S. Postal Service — are responsible for repairing and maintaining freestanding mailbox structures and would give code enforcement clear authority to require repairs.
City legal staff worked with enforcement to place the provision under the correct code section, Pitchford said; the committee expressed support for the change as a measure to ensure reliable mail delivery and maintain basic habitability standards.
