Middletown recognizes 67 Special Olympics athletes and volunteers; countywide participation grows

The Enlarged City School District of Middletown recognized its Special Olympics athletes, coaches and volunteers at the June 18 meeting. Superintendent and staff described the May 17 event in which Middletown sent 67 athletes to compete against students from multiple Orange County districts.
Coach Chris Conklin, who the district identified as Middletown’s volunteer head coach for nine years, said participation has grown from eight athletes at inception to 67 this year. Conklin also described Middletown’s behind‑the‑scenes support to Goshen as host, noting the district shipped scoring systems and equipment and provided logistics assistance.
"Our team size, we began like I said with 8 athletes last year, we had 42. This year, 67. It's just growing each and every year," Conklin said. The district thanked volunteer coaches by name during the presentation, and athletes received certificates and tokens of appreciation.
Board members and district officials lauded the volunteers, buildings-and‑grounds crew and technology staff for logistical support and asked the athletes and families to gather for photos and certificates following the meeting.
