James Island deputies report solved burglary, renewed dirt-bike enforcement and park gate damage

Lieutenant James of the Island Sheriff's patrol briefed the Town of James Island council on recent public safety activity, including a solved multi-jurisdictional burglary, a damaged gate at Pinckney Park and stepped-up enforcement against recreational dirt bikes in residential areas.
"We solved the case," Lieutenant James told the council, describing an investigation into burglaries at a Take 5 Oil Change location. He said the suspect was located in Houston after detectives reviewed tag-reader data and coordinated with other jurisdictions.
The deputy reported damage to a gate at Pinckney Park at 461 Fort Johnson Road; no suspects were identified at the meeting. Deputies also described repeated incidents involving off-road dirt bikes on local streets and said the department has resumed targeted, safety-conscious pursuits in certain circumstances after a prior policy of non-pursuit.
The patrol demonstrated a new mobile traffic device described as a "stealth stat" placed temporarily on Seaside to collect vehicle counts, sizes and speeds. The device, the deputy said, can distinguish large vehicles and provide live data to help identify problem times or locations.
Lieutenant James also recounted a nonvenomous rat snake removal led by Deputy Chris King and noted that violent crime remained generally low; he referenced an isolated homicide that occurred on Ferguson Road in the city jurisdiction and said a suspect had been arrested in that case.
The lieutenant closed by noting staff coverage and that he would be away for a scheduled retreat next month.
No formal council action was taken on the patrol updates during the meeting, but deputies described operational changes and tools that they said will be used to address recurring complaints.
