Mifflin County planning staff told the Board of Commissioners on June 17 that the countywide comprehensive plan survey generated approximately 778 responses and that the county will hold a planning commission public hearing in August before seeking adoption in the fall.
The survey covered topics including parks and recreation, natural resources, safety in residents' homes, blight and redevelopment, and transportation and wayfinding for state parks and game lands. Planning staff said 17 goals and objectives have been identified for the draft plan.
"The community survey resulted in approximately 778 responses," a county planning staff member said. Staff said about 14 to 15 people attended an open house the previous evening to review draft elements and discuss projects near their homes.
Why it matters: the comprehensive plan will guide county policy for roughly the next decade. Commissioners were told a draft plan will be delivered to them before the planning commission public hearing so commissioners can comment ahead of a likely fall adoption.
Commissioners and staff emphasized blight and neighborhood conditions as a leading area for action; staff said the county is already engaging in creating a redevelopment authority. The planning staff recommended public participation when the draft is released and outlined the planned schedule: planning commission public hearing in August and formal board adoption in September or October, pending staff and commission review.
No formal vote on the plan occurred at the meeting; staff presented progress and the schedule for the next steps.
