Library director warns statewide databases will shrink July 1; exploring shared subscriptions

The Town of Lakeville library will lose several statewide research databases on July 1 because of cuts to federal funding, Director Jennifer Jones told the trustees.
Jones said the library will lose a range of Gale resources including subject-specific “In Context” databases covering science, biography and health, as well as access to Transparent Language. She is soliciting quotes for replacement services and said she has received a quote for an EBSCO database similar to Peterson’s career and test-prep resources.
Jones said she will consult the library network to explore cost-sharing and consortial purchasing so the library can maintain key online services after July 1. The change will affect database availability provided via the statewide library network; Jones plans to report back with cost and sharing options.
Trustees did not take a formal vote on database subscriptions at the meeting.
