PSC accepts SMECO tariff raising monthly demand charge for Piscataway wastewater plant

The change was accepted for filing with an effective date of June 26, 2025.
Staff said the revised tariff pages use the calculation method consistent with the initial tariff filing that authorized SMECO to offer service under schedule WSSC on July 13, 2022. The filing reflects the site's transition following construction of a bioenergy facility and a change in the plant's load profile from a full-requirements customer to a supplemental service customer.
Damon Kroeger, representing SMECO, thanked staff for its analysis and said SMECO was available to answer questions. Commissioners commented on SMECO's procurement features; one commissioner highlighted SMECO's use of bilateral agreements and hedges as an example of practices that can enhance resource adequacy and reduce reliance on capacity markets.
The commission voted to accept the tariff revisions for filing with an effective date of June 26, 2025. The motion carried with Commissioners Litton, Barbay, Richard and Chair Hoover recorded as voting "aye."
