The Planning Commission unanimously approved sign permit 25-0849 for a halo‑illuminated wall sign for the new Q Terrace restaurant at 680 South Coast Highway.
Assistant planner Sarah Olsen told the commission the proposed black painted aluminum reverse-channel letters will be halo-illuminated with warm white LEDs and will have a total sign area of 24.16 square feet; the tallest letter "q" is 29 inches high, the primary letters are 15 inches high and the second line is 6 inches. Staff found the design met municipal code size and illumination criteria and recommended approval under a Class 1 CEQA exemption.
Commissioners asked whether a pedestrian-oriented blade sign had been considered. The applicant said they were in design discussions about a non-illuminated blade sign and would file a separate administrative sign permit if they pursue it; staff confirmed that a blade sign could be processed administratively if it meets illumination and size standards.
There were no public comments on the sign. A motion adopting the resolution approving sign permit 25-0849 and finding the action exempt from CEQA passed unanimously on roll call (Commissioners Goldman, Whiting, Dubin and Chair Sadler voting yes). Chair Sadler noted a 14-day right of appeal to City Council.
