The Cheektowaga Zoning Board of Appeals voted on June 18 to deny a variance request for a concrete parking pad at 52 The Ave.
Applicant explained the pad was requested to help an elderly parent access the house without stairs; the home’s family room sits at the side of the residence and a level approach to the room would allow the applicant’s nearly‑80‑year‑old father easier entry. The owner said the proposed pad would be used only occasionally for parking.
Board members expressed concern about the narrow space between the house and adjacent property and concerns about the gas meter location on the side of the house. The board concluded that the proposed pad would place a parked car dangerously close to the neighbor’s property line and that using a sidewalk or ramp alternative might be safer.
A motion to deny passed unanimously. The applicant was told an accessible ramp to the front door or a sidewalk to the backyard might be alternatives that would not require the requested variance.
