Commission members said the county’s new comprehensive plan (and associated greenway and open-space plan) has been adopted and encouraged local planning commissioners and municipal officials to review the goals, objectives and implementation recommendations.
Commissioner remarks praised consultant HRG’s work on the greenway and open-space plan and said the plan includes lists of potential funding sources to implement projects. Commissioners asked that the planning commission formally note its review of the new comp plan in the minutes and encouraged municipal officials to examine the plan’s priorities for open space, trail connections and conservation.
Commissioners and staff also outlined a series of regional open-space meetings being held to promote the plan, and said those sessions would provide materials showing where conserved or prioritized areas are located and where municipalities could act. County staff and the economic development director said they planned to attend regional meetings and to use them to engage municipal officials; staff also said the county’s conservation advisor and other staff will brief attendees and be available to discuss next steps for municipalities that want to pursue plan recommendations or update their local plans.
Why it matters: county comprehensive plans frame long-term priorities that guide municipal land‑use decisions and funding applications; municipal review and buy-in are commonly needed to implement greenway and open-space projects.
What’s next: commissioners recommended that the planning commission record a formal recommendation in the meeting minutes that local planning commissioners review the new county comprehensive plan and its goals and objectives and consider how local plans and funding strategies could align with it. Staff noted regional meetings were scheduled and that commission staff would support municipal follow-up.
