College Station ISD assessment staff on June 17 presented end‑of‑year NWEA MAP results showing districtwide growth across student achievement deciles and notable median growth by ethnic groups the district has prioritized for improvement.
Presentation highlights
- Decile analysis: Staff showed decile charts (10, 20 ... 90) that compare the district’s distribution to the national norm. The presenter explained NWEA’s decile framing: "If the school district represented the entire United States of K–12 students, each decile would contain about 10% of the population." The district’s distribution, staff said, showed several deciles with greater than 10% of students in higher achievement bands.
- Growth (median student growth percentile): The district’s median growth percentiles by initial achievement deciles were largely above the 50th percentile, a pattern NWEA representatives said is not typical for many districts. Presenters emphasized that winter‑to‑spring growth generally exceeded the fall‑to‑winter increases, consistent with deeper mastery as the academic year closes.
- Equity lens: Staff presented the same decile and growth breakdowns by ethnicity (African American, Hispanic, Asian, multi‑ethnic, White and Native American). Presenters said the district can drill down to the student level from each decile to inform targeted interventions; the presenter noted campus instructional staff and MTSS coaches have access to student-level data.
- Subject detail: The presentation displayed k–8 mathematics, algebra 1/geometry/algebra 2 groupings, English/Spanish reading, and science (including biology) growth graphics. Several slides showed strong growth for students in lower achievement bands — a result staff described as promising for targeted interventions.
What district staff said
- Presenter (district assessment staff): "Our campus admin have access to these, so do their instructional coaches, their MTSS coordinator or coaches. And for them, whenever they click on a bar, it actually shows you the kids." The presenter underscored the ability to move from aggregate patterns to individual students for interventions.
Board response
Trustees praised the approach and asked clarifying questions about the measures and how the district will use student-level data to support historically underperforming groups. Several trustees said the presentation reinforced the district’s investments in targeted interventions and assessment tools.
