Project managers say Wayland and Greystone school builds are on track for September 2026; high school renovations under way

Project managers for North Providence presented a construction update on June 18, reporting that the new Wayland and Greystone elementary schools are progressing on schedule and are expected to be operational for the start of the September 2026 school year.
Phil Conte (design team) and Matt McBurney (owner's project manager) told the committee construction is advancing on tight sites with the new Wayland building sited approximately six feet from the existing school. Conte said crews are beginning to enclose the building envelope and that interior mechanical and framing work is under way. He described the job sites as "very professionally run" and said there have been no incidents reported.
At Wayland, managers said final site work will proceed this summer, including a new parking lot area that can be completed while the existing school remains in use; interior abatement of the existing building is scheduled in preparation for demolition next summer. Greystone's work is in a similar phase: building envelope work and partial parking-lot completion with abatement before next summer's demolition.
Managers also described ongoing projects at North Providence High School, including cafeteria renovations and HVAC and plumbing improvements to the kitchen. The committee approved, during the meeting, a request to renovate two high-school restrooms adjacent to the gymnasium; the superintendent said the district will submit paperwork to the School Building Authority seeking roughly 60% reimbursement under health-and-safety rules.
Committee members asked about gymnasium size and bleacher space at the new schools; managers said the court playing area will be similar to existing gym floors at Maguire and Stephen Dole and that neither new gym is sized to add bleachers, though court dimensions are comparable and larger than some existing facilities.
Project managers credited collaboration among the construction team, school department staff and neighborhood stakeholders for keeping the projects on track.
No safety incidents were reported in the update; managers said utilities work is under way and the teams are preparing for enclosure and next-season occupancy.
