Select Board orders Cappy’s Liquor to appear after underage sale during compliance check

On June 3 Danvers police conducted alcohol compliance checks that resulted in an alleged sale of alcohol to an underage buyer at Cappy’s Liquor, 158 Andropa Street, the Select Board heard on June 17.
Police said officers and a decoy (an 18-year-old) entering the store were sold a six-pack of beer after the clerk failed to check identification. Lieutenant Colella and Officer Goddard (officers on scene) then spoke with the manager; both the employee and manager cooperated, returned the beer and gave the provided $20 back to officers. The department advised that the store would receive paperwork from the town regarding the incident.
After discussion the Select Board voted to require the licensee to appear at the Board’s next scheduled meeting for a hearing on the alleged violation. Board members said the hearing will allow the licensing board to review the incident and consider possible outcomes under state licensing authority.
During the Select Board exchange members discussed the frequency of compliance checks (the chief estimated 40–50 checks) and thanked police for keeping license holders accountable. The clerk was asked to notify the licensee of the hearing date; the board did not take further disciplinary action at the June 17 meeting pending the hearing.
