El Mirage continues liquor-license public hearing for new restaurant to July 1 after incomplete application

The El Mirage Common Council on June 17 continued a public hearing on an application for a restaurant liquor license (series 12) for a proposed business at 12313 Northwest Grand Avenue, Unit F (identified as Restaurant El Oaxacano/Del Sol). The hearing was continued to the next council meeting on July 1 to allow the applicant and staff to complete the police department’s investigative review.

Police staff told the council they could not complete their investigation because several questions on the Department of Liquor Licenses and Control application were unanswered. The applicant told the council she had since submitted the missing information and asked whether the materials had been received. “I did end up turning in the application, and I did come to the City Council to, for the question I needed, and I did turn in the application after that,” the applicant said during the hearing.

The city attorney advised that, because this is a public hearing, the council could continue (not close) the hearing to a specific future date to allow staff to finish the investigation and avoid reposting the item. Councilmember Dorsey moved to continue the hearing to July 1; Councilmember Winston seconded. The motion passed with the public hearing left open until that date.

Why it matters: The council’s continuation preserves the formal public-hearing record while allowing the police department time to complete its investigation under state liquor licensing protocols. The council specifically requested staff and the applicant coordinate to ensure all required documentation and photographs meet the Department of Liquor’s standards before the item returns.
