The Transportation Affairs Committee approved a trial to add no-parking segments on 80 Fourth Street near Joy’s Ice Cream to reduce congestion and create yield points for passing vehicles.
Engineering staff said the trial marks no-parking areas between specific driveways and by a fire hydrant to create staggered pull-outs where vehicles can yield and allow traffic to pass safely. The recommendation follows complaints that the block is difficult to pass during busy periods at the ice cream parlor.
Residents had mixed views: Karen Deacon, who lives at 2336 North 80 Fourth, said the business is popular and supports measures to reduce double-parking that prevents passing. Mike Atols, who lives at 2321 North 80 Fourth, said he opposed a no-parking sign directly in front of his home because his family of five uses that space and he believes parked cars slow traffic.
Committee members agreed on a trial, and after discussion amended the motion so engineering will run a 90-day trial but return to the committee around July 15 with an interim report on how the trial is performing (effectively a mid-trial check). The amended motion passed unanimously.
Engineering also noted the city’s curb-painting program and offered to coordinate with residents who want painted apron clearances.
