Village Board appoints and swears in Derek Eder to fill Trustee seat vacated by Dr. Susan Buchanan

The Village Board of Oak Park voted unanimously on June 3 to concur with President Skamman’s selection of Derek Eder to fill the trustee vacancy created by the May 8 resignation of Dr. Susan Buchanan.
President Skamman moved to concur with her choice; the motion was seconded and the clerk called the roll. Trustees Straw, Enya, Levin Jacobson, Taglia and President Skamman all voted “yes.” Clerk Waters then administered the oath of office and swore in Derek Eder.
Derek Eder, sworn in as village trustee, introduced himself to the board and attendees. Eder described his background as a civic technologist and climate advocate and identified himself as founding partner of DataMaid and co-founder and former president of Chai Hacknight. He told the board he has worked on civic-technology projects and been active with the Oak Park Climate Action Network (OPCAN).
“I commit to serve all 53,000 residents of Oak Park to the best of my ability,” Eder said. He said he will “continue Susan Buchanan’s climate action leadership” and push for increased sustainability funding, expanded electrification programs and more data to measure progress toward local climate goals. Eder noted Oak Park’s climate plan target — a stated local goal to reduce community emissions by 60% within a short time frame — and said the village must move quickly and equitably on electrification and energy-efficiency programs.
The board paused for a ceremonial swearing-in photo and brief remarks. President Skamman and trustees publicly thanked Dr. Buchanan for her service during a transition acknowledgement earlier in the meeting.
