County committee approves prairie restoration contracts for two parks, including three-year maintenance and prescribed burns

Dane Countys Public Works and Transportation Committee on June 17 recommended awarding prairie-restoration contracts for two county properties: Walking Iron County Park and the Door Creek Wildlife Area.
Todd presented the awards and summarized the scope: "this is a contract award for HTS Inc, for the prairie restoration, at this park. Basically, what this says is for establishment and then a 3 year contract afterwards for maintenance, which includes, you know, they gotta re they gotta maintain the fire breaks, they gotta do any herbicide treatments, and then they also have to do a prescribed burn of this at the 3 year mark." Todd said the work includes establishing prairie plantings and then recurring maintenance tasks culminating in a prescribed burn at the three-year point.
The committee approved Resolution 57 to award the contract to HTS Inc. for the Walking Iron County Park project and Resolution 58 to award the contract to Native Resource Preservation for the Door Creek Wildlife Area. Committee members noted both firms bid on both projects but different sizes and scopes led to separate awards.
Motions were made and seconded and both resolutions carried by voice vote with no opposition recorded in the transcript.
Staff said the maintenance terms are intended to ensure establishment success and address invasive species through herbicide treatment, fire-break maintenance and a scheduled prescribed burn.
