Trustees delay vote on new twice-monthly meeting schedule after concern over livestreaming and July meeting

The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees postponed a decision to adopt a schedule of two board meetings per month after trustees objected that the proposal was being presented as a first read and raised concerns about livestreaming, workshops and the loss of a July regular meeting.
Administration presented the proposal to move to two scheduled meetings each month, saying the change would increase responsiveness and reduce reliance on ad hoc meetings. Dr. Cantu said the goal was to set “two meetings a month scheduled on Tuesdays” with one meeting for information and one for action to avoid repeated extra meetings.
Trustees and members of the public urged caution. Vice President Ladesma Woody said workshops should not be used to conduct board business and asked that the board follow its operating procedures by not taking final action on a first read. Trustee Pantoja and Trustee Franco also supported postponement until the board had time to review changes and consider live streaming for additional meeting types.
Community speakers urged transparency. Jessica Marquez, president of the Del Valle Education Association, asked that workshops be livestreamed monthly to keep the public informed. Marissa Dela Rosa, speaking as a resident, thanked trustees who had sought transparency in prior meetings and said the community expected questions to be answered with “fidelity and professionalism.”
A motion to postpone action until the next regular or special meeting passed 8-0. Administration said it is prepared to implement two meetings per month and to make adjustments to livestreaming and schedules if the board so directs.
Trustees discussed whether to schedule a July meeting; some trustees said a July meeting is needed because it occurs before school starts, while administration noted district closures, vacations and conferences make July scheduling challenging. The board did not make a decision about the July meeting date at this session.
