Richland resident requests city recognition for visiting surgeon training conference

Ralph Kern, a long-time Richland resident and volunteer with a fund-raising group, used public comment at the June 17 council meeting to ask the city to provide recognition for an upcoming surgical training conference in September.
Kern said the conference will draw about 100 surgeons from around the world who will stay at the Holiday Inn and receive training at a nearby facility. He asked the city to consider a reader-board welcome message and a proclamation recognizing the event; he also described a supporters’ dinner associated with the conference. Kern said his local fundraising organization (Qantasign) has raised roughly $2.5 million since 2002 to support related work.
Council acknowledged the presentation and asked for the conference dates; Kern replied the event will be Sept. 8–11. No formal council action or commitment was recorded at the meeting.
