Board members voted to: (1) adopt a drafted purpose statement describing the board’s role “to advise the town council on policies and practices related to animal welfare, public safety, shelter operations and responsible pet ownership,” (2) revise membership language to ask for a willingness to participate in projects or events and (3) add duties to “advocate for the well‑being of all animals by fostering collaboration, education and outreach” and to “encourage responsible pet ownership and raise awareness about homeless animals in need of caring homes.” The board agreed to remove language explicitly naming animal welfare organizations from the purpose statement and to soften membership expectations so that active volunteering is encouraged but not required.
