Denton City Council certifies District 3 runoff, swears in new council member

The Denton City Council on June 17 adopted an ordinance canvassing the returns of the June 7 municipal runoff election for Council District 3 and formally accepted the results provided by Denton County Elections showing the winning candidate received 65.47% of the vote.
City Secretary Lauren Thoden presented the final results to the council and recommended adoption of the draft ordinance that would declare and make effective the outcome. "The final runoff election results as provided by Denton County elections ... received 65.47% of the votes cast," Thoden said during her presentation. Council member Jester moved to adopt the ordinance; the motion was seconded by Council member Holland and passed by a unanimous voice vote.
After the ordinance was adopted, council issued a certificate of election and administered the state, city and local oaths of office to the newly elected District 3 representative. The newly sworn council member, Susie Rumor, spoke briefly after taking the oaths, thanking voters and supporters: "I just wanted again to thank everybody that trusted me with this position ... I really hope that I make everybody proud ... I will always do my best to make the best decision with the information that I have, work kindly with everybody, collaborate, and try to do the best for the city of Denton."
The certificate presented states the election was held on 06/07/2025 and that Susie Rumor was duly elected council member for District 3. The formal oath included both the state oath and a city oath in which the member pledged to "preserve, protect, and defend the city charter, code of ordinances and resolutions of this city." Family members were introduced in the chambers following the oath.
The ordinance adopting and certifying the runoff fills the District 3 seat and will take effect as provided in the ordinance. The council then proceeded to subsequent agenda business.
