Wayne County to close Grosse Ile toll bridge June 23–July 3; webcams and paving plans announced

Wayne County will close the toll bridge serving Grosse Ile from Monday, June 23, through Thursday, July 3, township officials said. The county told Grosse Ile Township it expects to finish work before the Fourth of July weekend.
The township announced the closure and related traffic preparations during a public update. Joe Porcirrelli, a Grosse Ile Township official, said the township ordered webcams for the bridge about a month ago and expects them to be installed by the closure date so residents can view conditions online. "We're hoping these will be in by the closure date," Porcirrelli said. He said the webcams will show the corridor "from Meridian to Bridge Road across Toll Bridge through the plaza all the way to Jefferson." Porcirrelli said the livestreams will be available on the Grosse Ile Township website.
Porcirrelli also described plans to pave one lane on the Riverview side of Bridge Road past the toll plaza. The township offered to pay for the work, he said, but Wayne County opted to review the location and will cover the cost; the county requires paperwork that must be processed by its offices. As a result, the lane paving is not expected to occur before the scheduled closure and will be "the first thing on our list after the closure," Porcirrelli said.
The township provided recent vehicle counts to illustrate potential congestion. "Some years back" the bridge saw about 10,000 crossings, Porcirrelli said; more recently he reported "15 and 16,000." He said the peak times have shifted and that the heaviest traffic is now concentrated in the middle of the day: "From noon to 4 and really closer to 10 a.m. to 4, there's an exceptional amount of traffic coming on to Grosse Ile." Porcirrelli noted that typical commuter rush hours remain about 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Porcirrelli closed his remarks by offering to work with local groups and event organizers on schedule adjustments and by promising further updates if more information becomes available. "If we get any more information, we will update you immediately on that," he said.
No formal actions, votes, or deadlines were announced during the remarks; the information presented was described as notifications and plans pending county paperwork.
