Council approves JEO study to assess Santa Fe Lake weir safety and options

Augusta City Council on June 16 authorized an engineering services agreement with JEO Consulting Group for a concept study of the Santa Fe Lake weir.
Riley Schmidt, representing JEO, told council the current weir does not meet state safety requirements and the study will collect a topographic survey, evaluate alternative weir structures (including a possible labyrinth weir), assess two low points around the lake and analyze tower drainage and pipe leakage that could affect the dam.
City manager Josh Shaw said the project has been intermittent over several years and the city needs the study to close outstanding questions with state regulators and reach a consensus on a solution. He described the work as the study phase only; if a solution is selected the city would move to design and then seek funding, including state grants that rank better when a design or solution is in hand.
A council member moved to approve the JEO agreement and authorize the city manager to sign. The motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The consultants and staff emphasized the study is intended to produce a recommended solution and supporting documentation to advance any required designs, regulatory filings and future grant proposals. Staff noted the weir has historical repairs and that meeting state standards will likely require analysis of freeboard and other modern dam safety criteria.
What’s next: the city will receive the concept study, consider design options, evaluate funding opportunities and return to council for any design contracts or grant applications.
