Missoula proclaims Juneteenth and declares Pollinator Week

Mayor Andrea Davis read two proclamations Tuesday: one recognizing Juneteenth Independence Day and another declaring Missoula Pollinator Week.
Davis’s Juneteenth proclamation acknowledged the lasting impacts of slavery and noted that on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers in Texas learned that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were free. The proclamation states Missoula County and the City of Missoula observe Juneteenth and that the city recognizes the date as a holiday; city offices will be closed. The mayor also noted a Juneteenth celebration at Fort Missoula hosted by the Montana Black Collective, scheduled generally from 10 a.m. to noon.
In a second proclamation the mayor declared the week of June 16–20, 2025, as Missoula Pollinator Week in partnership with the National Wildlife Federation. The proclamation highlights the role of hummingbirds, bees, beetles, flies, moths and butterflies in pollination and ecosystem health and encourages sustainable gardening practices.
Councilor Jordan added a few remarks in support of pollinator habitat, noting cooperation between the Missoula County Department of Ecology and Extension and residents on boulevard plantings and other local efforts to restore native pollinator habitat.
