Monticello spring athletes win state titles; boys track places third at state

At the June 16 board meeting, Activities Director Gary Revnag delivered a comprehensive spring sports recap, highlighting multiple state qualifiers and individual state champions representing Monticello High School.
Revnag reported success across adaptive programs and traditional sports. In adaptive bowling, eight athletes qualified for state; Jenna Kingstead placed ninth and Bridal Onchuck placed third. He said four bowlers earned all-state honors for season performance. “So congratulations to our bowlers and coaches,” Revnag said.
The Coyotes’ adaptive softball finished 5–3 and were one win from advancing to the state tournament. The boys tennis team finished 17–5 with two doubles players advancing deep in section play. In trap shooting, senior Lance Clercy shot a perfect 100 at state qualifying and will represent Monticello at the state meet; Revnag noted Clercy was a Star Tribune athlete-of-the-month pick.
Baseball won the Mississippi 8 conference with a 14–8–1 record. Josie Ordorf earned all-star recognition for softball and several players were named to Class AA All-State honors in baseball. In boys and girls golf Monticello had multiple individual qualifiers; Brady McGriff and Carter Lemke advanced to state on the boys side, and junior Laney Opatz advanced to state for the girls for a second consecutive year.
Boys track placed third at the state meet with 12 individuals advancing; Revnag named Gus Starzak as a state champion in the 100 and Elvin Broeplay as a state champion in the triple jump. He also noted school records and state qualifiers across events. On girls track, Kayla Skistead was a state champion in the 400 and Revnag said she “broke a state record” at the meet, adding, “I believe it was 54 seconds.” Revnag emphasized the depth of the junior class and said many teams will move up in class next year but he expects continued competitiveness.
Board members and attendees acknowledged the coaches, athletes and volunteers who supported the season. The activities update occupied the bulk of the meeting’s reporting time and included photos and recognition of students and coaching staff.
